Weight Loss Supplements VS. Prescription Weight Loss Pills: A Comprehensive Review

Billions of dollars per year are made from the weight loss industry, whether it be weight loss supplements or surgery to help with weight loss. There are so many different types of products to choose from, that it can be confusing to choose the right one. This article’s purpose is to break down some of those choices for you, so that you can make the best decision.

First, we must realize that there are two different categories of weight loss pills. On one side, we have weight loss supplements, and on the other side, we have diet pills. Usually, supplements can be bought over the counter at a GNC or other nutritional supplement retailer. Diet pills, however, must be bought with a prescription at a pharmacy, or from a trusted source online.

One very important factor to realize is that the Food and Drug Administration does not stamp their approval on dietary supplements. This means that the diet pill or supplement has not been evaluated by the FDA. They can, however, recall an ingredient or product if it has been proved to be dangerous to consumers. Also, we must take note that the claims the companies make who are selling these supplements have not been regulated or evaluated by the FDA. This does not necessarily mean that weight loss supplements are bad. It just means that you should do a little extra research before deciding on which weight loss supplement to buy. Be sure to read the back of the bottle, and read each individual ingredient in the supplement. A good rule of thumb, is that if something seems suspicious, put it back on the shelf and move on.

We see commercials on TV all the time promoting different weight loss pills. Some of them are supplements, and some of them are weight loss pills. Just because the commercial is making a claim that the product works, does not mean that is true. This may not seem fair, but we have to understand that this industry means big money to weight loss supplement and diet pill companies. These companies spend billions of dollars researching their target audience and the average consumer to find out just exactly how to sell you their product.

Diet pills, on the other hand, are pharmaceutical drugs. These pills are designed in laboratories by scientists, and are derived of chemical compounds. They can only be bought with a prescription, at a pharmacy. Xenical is an example of one of these types of pills. One might derive comfort from the thought that the FDA regulates diet pills. However, more often than not, the long-term effects of pills are not fully realized until after they have been available on the market for several years. This is due to inadequate or insufficient testing prior to the pills being released to consumers for purchase. Something to watch out for are pills that have been approved by the FDA for one purpose, but are being marketed for a completely separate use. This separate use may be effective, and promoted heavily, but please be aware that this is not always the intended use of the product.

You must also be very careful when shopping for weight loss supplements or pills online. The benefit of shopping this way is that you typically will buy the pills or supplement at a much lower price, saving yourself some money. However, you can’t be 100% sure that you know you’re getting exactly what you pay for. Some online pharmacies are legitimate and trusted, while others are illegal operations.

When purchasing a weight loss solution, do your homework. Make sure that you know what you’re buying, and know the positive potential, and downside risk. Remember, this is your body.
